Research Areas: Biofilm-based wastewater treatment processes, biofilm structure, and properties of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS); heavy metal removal mechanisms by biofilms; stormwater management; environmental applications of nanotechnology; and nutrients removal. Courses Offered in Past Decade:
Contributions & Awards: Who’s Who in Engineering Education, 2002-present EPA/NIEHS Superfund Basic Research Program Scholarship, 1996-1999. University Graduate Scholarship, University of Cincinnati, 1995-1999. University Research Fellowship, University of Cincinnati, 1995. Narrative Description: Dr. Zhang has been active in a variety of research areas. One of her research interests is the study of biofilm extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Her research goal is to enhance our fundamental understanding of EPS through fundamental and practical research. Her other research interests include studying structural BMPs for stormwater management and evaluating environmental impacts of nanotechnology. After getting her Ph.D. degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1999, Dr. Zhang joined Carollo Engineers Santa Ana office for almost a year as a Process Engineer. She was involved in several wastewater treatment plant and process design projects. In December 1999, Dr. Zhang joined the faculty team in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Missouri-Rolla as an Assistant Professor. In Fall 2002, Dr. Zhang joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UMass Lowell as an Assistant Professor. Funded Research Projects:
